https://ift.tt/ixAGwE8 For lower body movement, the power from the abdomen and back is transmitted through the pelvis to the legs. Visualize that the pelvis is an extension of the leg. To take a step, use the abdomen and back to lift the pelvis, which in turn lifts the leg. Move the foot forward and stretch the pelvis downward until the foot is fully planted. All of these movements are internally driven with the upper body remaining still. Then, the foot will pull the body forward to complete the step.

Classical Tai Chi Master Hua Jiping, Ph.D.: "As we age we tend to originate more and more of our movement from our arms and legs, and less movement from our torso. The torso becomes weak, stiff, and ultimately atrophies, causing the problems we associate with aging. Originate power from the torso, develop waist, back muscles and avoid back problems, stimulating blood flow in the torso, the home of internal organs." Classical Tai Chi Sifu Jim Roach research from Medline: "With aging, the middle of the body (torso, core, trunk) becomes shorter as the disks gradually lose fluid and become thinner...This makes the arms and legs look longer when compared with the shortened trunk. The joints become stiffer and less flexible. Fluid in the joints may decrease. As early as your thirties, age-related muscle loss, known scientifically as sarcopenia, can mean you lose muscle mass at a rate of 3-5 percent each decade. Of particular concern are those muscles in your torso, which are primarily responsible for keeping you in an upright position. A reduction in their ability to maintain your posture can make you look stooped and hence shorter."

Correcting for sloppy posture
Correct Sloppy Postures Square Form
See the comments for this video on Youtube: As you say, it is indeed a gift to see the truth; thank you, Master Hwa. Other than consistently saying versions of "...my teacher doesn't do it that way...", what do the naysayers have to offer in a rationale? Before this, I did nothing but rounded Square Forms from 1976 to 2003. Those were truly " ...executed to its fullest extent and precision, while consecutive moves are executed smoothly, without any abrupt start-stops or interruptions...". The attention from teachers to such detail of correctness, aka wishful thinking "...fullest extent and precision...", was lacking. The more "robotic" with Square Form, the better because those robotic-looking movements are "stops" where the practitioner can check and correct. In some classes, particularly some large classes, there will be no "check and corrects" coming from the teacher, what Master Hwa refers to as "sloppy postures"
